Vintage Ukrainian Solid Brass Hookah Set

Ukraine, circa 1940s–1950s

This unusual matched pair of mid-20th-century hookahs includes one large and one smaller example, both constructed entirely from solid brass.

Dating to approximately the 1940s–1950s, the set reflects the durable metal construction and decorative simplicity associated with utilitarian smoking apparatus of the period.

The two hookahs share a closely related form, with rounded lower reservoirs, narrow vertical stems, flared bases, side fittings, and enclosed upper chambers, creating a visually cohesive large-and-small pairing.

Matched Large & Small Pair

The strongest feature of this set is the relationship between the two pieces.

Rather than two unrelated smoking vessels, the hookahs closely echo one another in overall design and construction.

The larger hookah features:

  • Broad rounded brass reservoir
  • Tall segmented central stem
  • Flared pedestal foot
  • Multiple angled side fittings
  • Decorative engraved band around the upper body
  • Large enclosed upper smoking chamber
  • Attached chain

The smaller hookah repeats many of these same features in a more compact format.

Displayed together, they create a particularly interesting visual comparison of scale and proportion.

Solid Brass Construction

Both hookahs are constructed from brass rather than plated base metal.

The material gives the vessels substantial visual warmth and has allowed them to develop a natural aged surface over time.

Variations in tone, oxidation, minor marks, and patina are consistent with vintage brass objects and contribute to their historic character.

The larger example also features engraved or chased decoration around the shoulder, including floral and scrolling motifs that provide contrast against the otherwise restrained metal surfaces.

Form and Smoking Function

Each piece follows the basic mechanical structure of a traditional water pipe.

The lower vessel would have functioned as the water reservoir, while the central stem directed smoke downward into the chamber before it was drawn through an attached hose.

The angled fittings visible on the bodies would have accommodated smoking hoses or other components of the original assemblies.

The original hoses/tubes are not included with this set.

The surviving brass bodies and fittings nevertheless preserve the essential architecture of the two smoking apparatus.

Upper Chambers

Both hookahs terminate in enclosed upper brass chambers with small ventilation openings.

The larger example has an especially prominent elongated upper assembly with a chain connecting the cap to the stem.

These enclosed forms give the pair a distinctive silhouette and make them visually different from the open-bowl construction commonly seen on many modern hookahs.

Historical Context

By the mid-20th century, hookahs and related water pipes had circulated widely across Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, and neighboring regions.

Metal examples were particularly practical because brass was durable, workable, resistant to corrosion, and capable of supporting both utilitarian and decorative forms.

This Ukrainian pair is interesting as a surviving example of that broader smoking tradition during the 1940s and 1950s.

Condition

Both hookahs remain in very good vintage condition.

The brass surfaces show natural age-related patina, oxidation, small scratches, discoloration, and handling wear consistent with decades of age.

The principal reservoirs, stems, bases, upper chambers, side fittings, and decorative components remain present.

Hoses and smoking tubes are not included.

Please review all photographs carefully for the most complete record of condition.

Collector Context

This set may appeal to collectors of:

  • Antique and vintage hookahs
  • Eastern European smoking artifacts
  • Ukrainian decorative objects
  • Brassware
  • Mid-century smoking culture
  • Water pipes
  • Tobacciana
  • Historical smoking technology

The fact that the two hookahs survive together as a large-and-small matched pair gives the set considerably more display character than either piece would have individually.
