Refund and Returns Policy
Policies governing the History of Smoke archive, website, research, services, purchases, historical content, and related activities.
Thank you for choosing History of Smoke, a collection and historical archive owned and operated by Goodson Gallery.
Our collection includes antique and vintage smoking artifacts, historical objects, reproductions, books, ephemera, artwork, collectibles, and related material. Because many of the objects we offer are unique, scarce, historically significant, or one-of-a-kind, purchases are subject to the following return, refund, and shipping policies.
All Sales Are Final
Unless otherwise required by applicable law, all sales are final.
We do not accept returns or issue refunds based on:
- Change of mind
- Buyer’s remorse
- Personal preference
- A change in collecting interests
- An item not fitting a purchaser’s intended display space or collection
- Characteristics, wear, patina, aging, or imperfections that were disclosed or reasonably visible prior to purchase
Many objects offered through History of Smoke are antique, vintage, handmade, culturally specific, historically used, or otherwise unlike newly manufactured retail merchandise. Age-related wear, patina, oxidation, surface variation, repairs, manufacturing irregularities, and evidence of prior use may form part of an object’s history and character rather than constitute a defect.
We encourage collectors to review all photographs, descriptions, dimensions, condition information, and other available documentation before purchasing.
Your Satisfaction & Peace of Mind
We want collectors to understand what they are acquiring before completing a purchase.
If you would like additional information about an object, please contact us prior to purchase. Depending on the item, we may be able to provide:
- Additional photographs
- Detail photographs
- Videos
- Measurements
- Condition information
- Historical or cultural context
- Additional information regarding construction, materials, markings, provenance, or attribution
We strongly encourage questions before purchase, particularly when acquiring antique or one-of-a-kind material.
Antique, Vintage & Historical Objects
Objects within the History of Smoke Museum Collection and other antique or vintage categories are generally sold in their existing condition.
Descriptions, dates, cultural attributions, geographic origins, materials, and historical interpretations are prepared in good faith using available evidence, scholarship, comparable objects, provenance, physical examination, and professional judgment where applicable.
Historical objects can sometimes present uncertainties that cannot be conclusively resolved. Unless specifically represented otherwise, estimated dates, origins, cultures, makers, or attributions should therefore be understood as informed professional opinions rather than guarantees of absolute historical certainty.
Purchasers are encouraged to request any desired clarification before completing their purchase.
Damaged or Incorrect Orders
Our final-sale policy does not prevent us from addressing an order that:
- Arrives materially damaged during shipment
- Is lost during shipment
- Contains an item different from the item ordered
- Has another material fulfillment error attributable to History of Smoke or Goodson Gallery
If there is a problem with your shipment, please contact us as soon as possible after delivery.
For shipping damage, please retain:
- The item
- All original packaging
- The shipping carton
- Packing materials
- Shipping labels
- Photographs of the package and damage
These materials may be required to document a carrier or shipping-insurance claim.
Please do not discard packaging or return an item without contacting us first, as doing so may affect our ability to investigate the shipment or pursue an insurance claim.
Shipping, Insurance & Protection
We take significant care in the packaging and handling of historical and collectible objects.
Orders valued over $500 are fully insured against qualifying loss or damage during shipment.
Depending upon the nature, value, fragility, and destination of an object, we may use additional protective packaging, insurance, signature confirmation, or other shipping precautions.
If an insured shipment arrives damaged or is lost in transit, History of Smoke and Goodson Gallery will assist with the applicable carrier or insurance claim and determine the appropriate resolution based upon the circumstances of the shipment.
Shipping damage should be reported promptly so that available carrier and insurance claim deadlines can be preserved.
Potential Exchange Options
Although all sales are final, we recognize that unusual circumstances can arise.
At our sole discretion, History of Smoke and Goodson Gallery may occasionally authorize an exchange or merchandise credit toward another available object.
Any such accommodation:
- Is considered individually
- Is not guaranteed
- Does not establish a general right of return
- May be subject to condition review, shipping costs, restocking or handling costs, value differences, or other reasonable conditions
Authorization must be obtained before an item is shipped back to us.
Unauthorized returns may be refused.
Return Shipping for Authorized Exchanges
If a return is specifically authorized by History of Smoke or Goodson Gallery, the purchaser is generally responsible for safely packaging and returning the item using a trackable and appropriately insured shipping method, unless the return results from an error on our part.
Original shipping charges and return shipping charges are generally non-refundable unless otherwise agreed in writing.
The purchaser remains responsible for an authorized return until it is successfully delivered to us.
Sale, Discounted & Promotional Items
Items purchased during a sale, with a promotional discount, through a negotiated offer, or at a specially reduced price remain final sale unless otherwise specifically agreed in writing.
Books, Ephemera, Reproductions & Gift Shop Items
Books, printed material, historical reproductions, merchandise, and gift shop products are also considered final sale unless the item arrives materially damaged, incorrect, or otherwise qualifies for an exception described in this policy.
Digital Products
Digital downloads, digital archive materials, research materials, downloadable publications, and other electronically delivered products are non-returnable and non-refundable once access or delivery has been provided, except where otherwise required by applicable law.
Order Cancellations
Orders begin processing after purchase and cancellation cannot be guaranteed.
If you believe an order was placed in error, contact us immediately. If the item has not yet entered fulfillment or shipment preparation, we may be able to cancel the order at our discretion.
Once an order has shipped, the final-sale provisions of this policy apply.
Payment Disputes & Communication
If you believe there is a problem with an order, we ask that you contact us directly before initiating a payment dispute or chargeback.
We take order concerns seriously and will review legitimate issues involving shipping, fulfillment, damage, or other discrepancies.
Nothing in this provision limits any rights that cannot legally be waived.

By completing a purchase through History of Smoke, you acknowledge that you have had an opportunity to review the item information provided and agree to the terms of this Returns, Refunds & Shipping Policy.
